The Department of Tamil, Ethiraj College for Women, established in the year 1948, occupies a prestigious position not only in the State of Tamil Nadu, but also across the Nation. In its nascent stage, only General Tamil was offered to the students of degree courses in Arts and Science. Commerce. From these humble beginnings, it is today a fully fledged research department, attracting Students from far and wide. The post Graduate course, begun in 1986 has been highly successful, always enjoying 100% results and bagging several University Ranks under the non-autonomous stream. The potential of the department was rapidly recognized and it was upgraded, first as a P.G. Department and later as a Research Department offering M.Phil. 1996 and Ph.D. 2002. With autonomy being conferred on the College, the Sky was the limit for the Department of Tamil.

The Tamil Department has also grown along with the growth of the College. Many Stories, poetries, articles and drawing born out of the creative talents of the students much interested in Tamil, found place in Magazines like Tamil Aruvi. At Present there are Three Aided Staff and Five Management are working in the Department with Ph.D. Qualifications and are now serving meritoriously in the department 30 students completed their Ph.D. and more than 100 students completed their M.Phil. degree. We hope believe that the Tamil Department will reach many more heights and many more laurels to its credit. The department is the hub of literary and academic activities with several Publications by the faculty members. Several National and International conferences and Workshops are also a part of the Department Culture.
