Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics and Post Graduate & Research

Department of Food and Nutrition offers three programmes.

  • Undergraduate:B. Sc Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Postgraduate:M.Sc Food and Nutrition
  • M. Phil:M.Phil Food and Nutrition

The Undergraduate Programme“Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics”introduced in 2005 aims at developing the innate talent of the students to meet the demands of the changing scenario in health care. With an ever-growing demand for dietitians in India and abroad, our students are offered lucrative job opportunities in the health care arena. This programme integrates theoretical knowledge related to nutrient metabolism and disease with therapeutic aspects of nutrition support. The curriculum includes core papers like Clinical Nutrition, Medical Nutrition Therapy, Sports Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition, Human Development, Food Service Management and Interior Decoration that form the vital components of health care management.

The Master’s programme “Food and Nutrition” introduced in 2003, aims at developing research skills and abilities in nutritional issues of contemporary interest. The highlight of this programme is papers like Applied Statistics and Research Methodology, Clinical Biochemistry, Analytical techniques in Nutrition, Medical Nutrition therapy, Food and Drug interaction, Public Health Nutrition,Innovative product development and Advanced Studies in Food Science, Carbohydrate, Energy, Proteins, Lipids, Vitamins and Minerals which provides a profound insight in the field of food and nutrition.

The Department was upgraded into a research department in the year 2009 with the introduction of M.Phil programme in Food and Nutrition. Emphasis on promotion of research activities and teaching is the ultimate goal of this programme. It is accomplished through the papers like Research Methodology and Introduction to teaching learning process and Advanced paper in Food and Nutrition. Dissertation work kindles the spirit of research and development among the students.

The dietetic internship program undertaken by the students in various hospitals provide hands on experience in the field of dietetic practice. The tie up with various consultancies has helped the department to place its students in coveted jobs. Students are equipped to take up jobs in the areas of patient care in hospitals, fitness centres, nutritional counsellors, diabetic educators, child development project officers, nutritional marketing, nutritional research, teaching in schools and colleges, food industries and in various government departments of food quality control.

    SEMINAR AND WORKSHOPS

    Department Activities 2014-2015
    •   Nutrifest2014, Annual Association of the department was held on 17th and 18th September 2014. Dr. R.M. Anjana, Joint Managing Director, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Speciality Centre inaugurated “Nutrifest 2014”. She addressed the gathering on “Non-Communicable Disease Among Young Adults in India The Current Scenario”.

    •   A Panel Discussion was conducted on the topic “Health Compromising Behavior and Health Enhancing Practices among Adolescence”. Dr.Tvisha Parikh, Assistant Physician, Exercise & Sports Medicine, Sri Ramachandra University, was the moderator for the panel discussion. The other panel members were Ms. Sudha Vasudevan, senior scientist, MDRF, Chennai, Ms SanthalaMedappa yoga therapist, and Ms. ArunaJaikumar, Assistant professor, Madras School of social work.

    •   Dr. Gurdeep Kaur, Registered Dietitian, AIIMS, New Delhi, addressed the students on Nutrition in Renal Disorders on 11th October 2014. She demonstrated a database formulated by her for the practical application of the software in Nutrition and Diet Counselling.

    •   Dr. Kausalya Moorthy & Justice M.N.Moorthy Endowment Lecture was organized on 6th March 2015, Dr.A.G.Karthikeyan, Consultant Paediatrician, Dr.Mehta’s hospitals, Chennai spoke on “Care of the New Born”

      MOU

    •   The Department signed MoU with the Centre for Indian Knowledge System (CIKS), Kotturpuram,Chennai on 2nd July 2014.

    •   Ms. M. Menaka and Dr. K.R.S. GirijaShyamsundar successfully completed a Minor Research Project funded by CIKS in 6 weeks duration on “Physiochemical Properties, Nutrient Analysis, Standardization, Acceptability &Glycemic Index of Indigenous Rice Varieties”.

    Department of CND began their activities by commemorating “National Nutrition week” from 1st to 5thSeptember 2015. The Department students organized various competitions. The theme for the Nutrition week celebrations was “Say No to Food Waste”. More than 100 students from eight city colleges participated in the week long celebrations.

    The Annual Department Association “Nutrifest 2015” was organized on 14th& 15th September. The theme for this year was “Disease Free Lifethe Future We Want” emphasizing right food, safe water and healthy mind. Dr. B.W.C. Sathiyasekaran, Professor, Dept. of Community Medicine, SRMU, Chennai delivered the inaugural address.

    The academic sessions began with a talk on the topic “Stress, a Silent killer” by Dr. Surya Kumar, Consultant Psychologist, and his wife Ms. Kalpana, Life Coach.
