ABOUT US

75 Years of Excellence

The Post Graduate and Research Department of English, began its journey in 1948 with the introduction of Foundation English for all the undergraduate students. It has steadily grown over the years and is now one of the most reputed English Departments in the city. The Undergraduate Programme which was started in 1962 has been highly successful, and produced excellent results and also bagged several University Ranks under the non-autonomous stream. The potential of the Department was recognized for its potential and was upgraded as a Postgraduate Department in 1971 and later as a Research Department offering M.Phil. and Ph.D.  in 1989 and 1996 respectively.

Owing to the name the department had made for itself in its formative years and the growing demand for courses in English Literature, an English department was incepted in 1987 in the Self Supporting stream, with two sections of English Literature at the UG Level. Keeping in mind the need for career oriented courses, one section was converted to English and Communication Skills in the academic year 2005 – 2006.

Ever since the College was granted autonomy in 1999, the Department has been constantly widening and changing the syllabus to meet the challenges of the rapidly developing world.
