ABOUT US

The Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology started its everlasting journey in 1948 with the inception of Botany as an ancillary subject.  It was further elevated as a major department in the year 1964 and witnessed 57 glorious years in its journey having done a remarkable service to the society by turning out eco-conscious graduates. The nomenclature of the department was changed in the year 2000 to include nuances and application-oriented subjects to cater the needs of the industries and society at large. The department has currently blossomed into a well-equipped research department with the introduction of M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in the years 2007-08 and 2012-13 respectively. It has to its credit 34 M.Phil. research scholars and 6 doctoral candidates since the inception of research programmes. Currently, 12 Research scholars are pursuing Ph.D in the department. The Staff and Research Scholars of the Department have published a total of 68 research papers in reputed journals as well as in National and International Conference Proceedings during the last five years.

The curriculum for under graduation programme with Choice Based Credit System provides adequate knowledge and strong foundation in Classical Botany well integrated with current trends and advanced technologies to enlighten and equip students with entrepreneurial skills.  To kindle the young minds of students towards pursuing higher studies and research, the department offers internship programme as well as self-study papers. Value added course in the name of “Diagnostic Lab Techniques” is offered to the final year UG students to create job opportunities. The department is immensely proud to harbour an herbal garden and a herbarium collection.

The department is keenly involved with an objective to educate students on the importance of plants as an integral part of existence of human life. It focuses on the holistic development of students by imparting intellectual, professional and personal values by conducting various academic programmes such as Workshops, Exhibitions, Seminars, Conferences and invited guest lectures. Organizing annual study trips for students enable them to understand the biology of plants outside the classroom environment. LANTANA, the annual association meet and BIOFACT, the magazine of the department gives great opportunities for the students to exhibit their talents on organizational and writing skill.

The department with its well qualified and able faculty members is actively involved since its inception in generating the graduates and research scholars with exciting potential for entry-level career in Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology as well as for excellence and recognition in global academia.
