2016-17

  JAGRITI – The Human Rights Association was conducted on 22.02.2017 at the College Auditorium.

Mrs. Chandradevi Thanikachalam, Vice President, Indian Council for Child Welfare and Member of Ethiraj College Trust, Inaugurated the programme and spoke on “Legal Remedies on Violence Against Women”.  A Panel Discussion on ‘Sexual Violence Against Women’ with eminent speakers – Mr.Karunanidhi, Retd. SP; Advocate Suseela Anand;  Ms. Nancy Thomas, Tulir  and Ms. Durga, Student as panelists. The Discussion created awareness on Sexual violence against women among students of Ethiraj College. Choodamani  Memorial Trust sponsored – Madras Players’ ‘Choodamani’ , a play on Rights of Women was organized in the afternoon, which was very well received by the student audience. 

2017-18

JAGRITI The human rights association was organized on 26th September with the theme ‘Celebrating feminism’. Ms. Amrutha Karayil, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Criminology, DG Vaishnav College inaugurated the program. A stage play was organized on women rights as a part of awareness creation agenda. It was followed by screening of short films on ‘consent’ and a discussion on Sexual Harassment was conducted with the students headed by Ms. Amrutha Karayil.

2018-19

JAGRITI was organized on 1st October 2018 , Director PS Mithran inaugurated the event on the theme Cyber Issues. The post graduate students of the department performed a stage play on cyber rights violations happening in cyber space. A panel discussion on the topic “Violations in cyber space: what needs to be done?” was held. Violations in cyber space with reference to women and children was discussed by Dr. Prince Solomon, Assistant professor, Department of social work, Madras christian college, Tambaram, Chennai. Dr. Latha Subramanian, Assistant professor, Department of criminology, University of madras made a speech on Cyber crimes. Dr. Ranjith Abraham, Assistant professor, Dr. Ambedkar law university, Chennai talked about Cyber laws. Human rights violations in cyber space with reference to transgenders was dealt by Delfina, Activist

2019-20

JAGRITI was conducted on  19th February 2020. Jagriti 2020, Mr. Erode Mahesh, inaugurated the program and delivered the inaugural address. Dr. K. Deepmala, Founder and Chairperson, Research and Action Center for Local Democracy and Former Director, CII, delivered the special address on social responsibility. A panel discussion on the ‘Need for social responsibility’ was held with the panelist mentioned below.

JAGRITI was held on 10th December 2020. The association day was organized with the theme ‘Covid-19: the refugee crisis’. The event was organized in collaboration with YUVA Active Advocacy Forum. Dr. S. Kothai, Principal, Ethiraj College for Women delivered the Presidential Address, Ms. Aishwarya Kalpathi, CEO and Founder, YUVA Active Advocacy Forum,  inaugurated the program and delivered the key note address, Special address were delivered by Mr. D. Ignatious Jayabalan, Project Manager, ADRA India, on “The dynamics of pandemic: citizenship governance and the refugee crisis”, Dr. Gladston Xavier, Associate Professor, Department of Social Work, Loyola College, on “Status of refugees in south asia during the pandemic”, Dr. Florina, Chief Zonal Officer, CASA, on “Psychological crisis for refugees in south asian context”, Mr. R. Pathmanathan, Education Program Coordinator, OfERR, on “Identities and intersectionality with standpoints and challenges of refugees”. 

Inter collegiate events were organized as a part of aware creation by the students of the department. An oratorical competition and a poster making competition were held and prizes were awarded to the winners of the events and certificates to all the participants.

2021-22

JAGRITI  was organised on 13th December 2021. Justice K. Chandru , Former Judge, Madras High Court served as Chief guest and gave special lecture on ‘ Need for Human Rights Education’

PROFILE OF THE DEPARTMENT

 

Ethiraj College for Women is the First College in the State of Tamil Nadu to offer a full fledged Post Graduate Degree Course in Human Rights and Duties Education. This prestigious program was started in the year 2002 with the noble intention of fulfilling the mission of Thiru. V.L. Ethiraj, which is ‘to sensitize young women to their rights and place in the society through advancement and application of relevant knowledge ‘.The PG Degree Course in Human Rights and Duties Education is in keeping with the objectives and goals of the college and the vision of our founder.

To provide greater protection and promote human rights through human rights education 

 

Mission 

To sensitise young women to human rights issues and to encourage students to combat human rights violations through application of human rights knowledge.

 

Major Achievement: 

The Department achieved GUINNESS WORLD RECORD for the longest play in Human rights by the staffs and students of the department New Record time 28hrs 34 minutes and 43 sec on March 8-9, 2019

About Us

The Post Graduate Department of Human Rights and Duties Education was started in the academic year 2002-2003 with UGC funding. This interdisciplinary program is spread over two years comprising four semesters. The degree course incorporates theoretical instruction with field visits and extension activities.

Students undergo mandatory internship and receive training in Research Methodology and draw inputs from Law, History, Criminology, Political Science, Journalism and Media Studies and other Social Sciences.

The department periodically conducts workshops and extension activities to make human rights education more meaningful.

The Department is proud to have achieved the Guinness World Record for the longest play on human rights issues (28hrs 34minutes and 43 Seconds) done by the women students of the department.

About the Programme

A human rights masters’ opens up employment opportunities in international organizations, non-governmental organizations, governmental institutions and more recently also companies and businesses. The interdisciplinary programme also prepares students for competitive exams.

Students are eligible to pursue M.Phil and PhD programmes. They can apply for Research assistant positions in Governmental and Non-governmental organizations. Prestigious Foreign fellowships for research exist in human rights education.

With human rights education declared by NCERT and UGC as a mandatory subject to be offered in schools and colleges with UGC conducting NET in Human Rights, PG students stand a good chance to become Teachers/ Human Rights Instructors. Students are also absorbed by NGOs, Media and in Corporate Sectors for training purposes in human rights.

From the academic year 2009-2010, this inter disciplinary course is offered as a self supporting course.
