ABOUT US
The Department aspires to provide value based education, imparting the ideals of academic excellence, sense of discipline and high ethical values, leading to the development of an integrated outstanding personality.
The Undergraduate course in Botany was established in the year 1964 and upgraded as Postgraduate Department in 1993 under Self Finance Stream. During the year 2003, to cope up with the increasing knowledge in Biotechnology the course was renamed as Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology. With a dedicated band of faculty, the department offers quality education not only to promote the subject knowledge among the students but also to make them a holistic personality.
The department has seen the glory of its growth and development from the day of its inception. As a mark of 25 years of completion a National level Conference and Exhibition on “Herbal Biodiversity and Health Management-New Strategies and Approaches (HBHM)” was organized in February, 2019.
National and International level Conferences, Workshops, Endowment lectures etc. have been organized frequently for the students to update their knowledge in the subjects which also improve their learning ability. It provides a platform for the students to exhibit their presentation and communication skills.
Research project, a part of the curriculum is done by the students in different subjects like Algology, Cytogenetics, Herbal Botany, Molecular Biology, Mycology, Pathology, Physiology, Phytochemistry, Bioremediation, Tissue Culture, Environmental Biology, Nanotechnology, Natural dyeing and Bioinformatics. Students are motivated to participate in the Inter-collegiate competitions conducted by various city colleges and they have won prizes and overall shields.
Internship programme was included in the curriculum as a career development programme which imparts real work experiences that provide students with opportunities to explore the interest and develop professional skills. They have done internship in various reputed organizations like Botanical Survey of India, Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, Regional Plant Quarantine Station, CLRI, IMPCOPS, Aavin, Government Museum, Vels Institute of Science, Technology & Advanced studies, etc. for a period of 30 days during the vacation.
