BEST PRACTICES OF THE DEPARTMENT

 

  1. Plant for the Day– Final year UG students are encouraged to display a plant every day with Scientific name and Family. 
  2. Herbal Garden – Maintenance of garden with medicinal herbs contributed by UG students.
  3. Herbarium– 451 Herbarium sheets contributed by the students are maintained in the Department.
  4. Campus hygiene – training the students to assess the quality of drinking

water within the campus. 

  1. Environmental Monitoring– Assessment of air quality in the lab and at different places in the campus.
  2. Entrepreneurial Skill: Students are motivated to cultivate, propagate and sell medicinal plants like Fenugreek, Pirandai, Coleus and mushroom.
  3. Waste management – Organic Plant waste from campus is utilized and converted into compost through Vermicomposting.
  4. Educational Trips– Organising field trips to study the biodiversity of the vegetations in the natural habitats.
  5. Industrial visits– Visits to various Research Institutions and horticultural farms to learn practical applications.
  6. Herbal Preparations– Making chooranam and leghiyum in small scale.
  7. Certificate course – Diagnostic lab techniques, Certificate course is offered to our UG students after college hours for their placement in hospitals and laboratories.
  8. Medical transcription– Invited guest lecture on medical transcription is given to motivate students for job placement.
  9. Alumnae Interaction– Alumnae are encouraged to interact with the present students to give them an insight of the prospects and avenues available to them after their graduation.

14. Feedback – Regular feedback is obtained from the students to upgrade the curriculum for the current needs.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Workshops:

 The department has organized various workshops at regional, State, National and International levels for the benefit of students and young researchers. The staff of the department have participated in various workshops to update their knowledge in the field.

Seminar/ Conferences/ Webinars

Faculty members and research scholars of the department presented 64 papers in various Seminar, conferences and webinars in the last five years and 18 papers received “Best Paper Award”.

Faculty Development Programmes: 

The staff of the department participate in Faculty Development Programmes periodically to enhance their pedagogical, research and e- content development skills.

Research Guidance: 

The Department has to its credit 34 M.Phil. research scholars and 6 doctoral candidates since the inception of research programmes. Currently, 12 Research scholars are pursuing Ph.D. in the department. 

Journal and Book Publications: 

The Staff and Research Scholars of the Department have published a total of 68 research papers in reputed journals, books as well as in National and International Conference Proceedings during the last five years.

Research scholars with fellowship as on December 2021:

  • Four Ph.D. Research Scholars have received Rs. 4,56,000/- as Merit Scholarship from TNDCE.
  • Four Ph.D. Research Scholars have received Rs.2,20,000/– as ECRIC Fellowship from Ethiraj College.
  • Six Ph.D. Research Scholars have received Rs. 60,000/- as Sambuvarayar Endowment Scholarship from University of Madras.
  • Faculty Project: Faculty Project funding from ECRIC of Rs. 15,000/-  

 

ABOUT US

The Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology started its everlasting journey in 1948 with the inception of Botany as an ancillary subject.  It was further elevated as a major department in the year 1964 and witnessed 57 glorious years in its journey having done a remarkable service to the society by turning out eco-conscious graduates. The nomenclature of the department was changed in the year 2000 to include nuances and application-oriented subjects to cater the needs of the industries and society at large. The department has currently blossomed into a well-equipped research department with the introduction of M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in the years 2007-08 and 2012-13 respectively. It has to its credit 34 M.Phil. research scholars and 6 doctoral candidates since the inception of research programmes. Currently, 12 Research scholars are pursuing Ph.D in the department. The Staff and Research Scholars of the Department have published a total of 68 research papers in reputed journals as well as in National and International Conference Proceedings during the last five years.

The curriculum for under graduation programme with Choice Based Credit System provides adequate knowledge and strong foundation in Classical Botany well integrated with current trends and advanced technologies to enlighten and equip students with entrepreneurial skills.  To kindle the young minds of students towards pursuing higher studies and research, the department offers internship programme as well as self-study papers. Value added course in the name of “Diagnostic Lab Techniques” is offered to the final year UG students to create job opportunities. The department is immensely proud to harbour an herbal garden and a herbarium collection.  

The department is keenly involved with an objective to educate students on the importance of plants as an integral part of existence of human life. It focuses on the holistic development of students by imparting intellectual, professional and personal values by conducting various academic programmes such as Workshops, Exhibitions, Seminars, Conferences and invited guest lectures. Organizing annual study trips for students enable them to understand the biology of plants outside the classroom environment. LANTANA, the annual association meet and BIOFACT, the magazine of the department gives great opportunities for the students to exhibit their talents on organizational and writing skill.

The department with its well qualified and able faculty members is actively involved since its inception in generating the graduates and research scholars with exciting potential for entry-level career in Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology as well as for excellence and recognition in global academia.
