The Department of Tamil was established in the year 1948 and General Tamil was offered to the students across various streams. The potential of the department was rapidly recognised and it was upgraded as a Post Graduate department in 1986. The efforts of the department proved fruitful producing 100% results and got several University ranks under the non-autonomous stream. It was further upgraded as a research department offering M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in 1996 and 2002 respectively. The department is now a hub of academic, literary and research activities attracting students from far and wide. The Department has produced 70 Research Scholars who have earned their Doctorate during 2002-2021 which added another feather to its cap.
